Kevin Saunders Hayes – All Instruments
Welcome back, we saved you a seat. This week’s quarantine composition – my weekly series of original music I write just for you – is about to begin.
Artists take inspiration from their surroundings and I wish I was presenting you titles like “Rainbow Unicorns” or “Another Boring Day in the Hood”.
Well, I’m not. This week I bring you Wall of Moms.
American citizens, exercising their constitutional right to free speech, are being gassed, beaten and kidnapped in unmarked vehicles by a secret police force. In the United States of America.
Basically all I can come up with is, WTF.
Fortunately “Moms don’t play” and a group of amazingly brave women have joined the Portland protests. The “Wall of Moms” has grown to include hundreds of women in yellow shirts linking arms to express their 2nd Amendment rights.
Now a “Wall of Dads” in orange shirts has has joined them, some with leaf blowers to push tear gas away from the crowds.* The “Wall of Nurses” also joined on Saturday in blue scrubs, and now a “Wall of Vets” has formed to help protect all of these brave women and men.
Wall of Moms. I sadly can’t believe how well the music fits with the images from the protest.
I yearn to bring you “Rainbow Unicorns”. Until then I will use my tiny flashlight to throw as much light as I can on the extraordinary women and men fighting this tyranny.
Aren’t you glad we saved you that seat? Until next week, my prayer is that you do not have to be anywhere with a leaf blower trying to push back the tear gas.

* Think about that sentence. “Leaf blowers to push away the tear gas.” How can it not make you weep?
