The Story

Turns out these magical little creatures were the only form of fireworks on display in what has to be the quietest 4th of July – ever – in the City of New York.

I couldn’t remember the last time I’d seen one, and it stirred memories of summer’s past at my grandparents, as my sister and I chased after swarms of them that appeared in their Bowling Green, KY backyard.

Did you know there’s even a species that can synchronize their flashing light patterns? Me neither. But it’s part of their mating display. The males fly and flash and the stationary females respond with a flash.

Sort of firefly roller disco.

Well, even on the prowl for the mate, they always seem pretty chill to me. Never in a hurry as they light the way… to, I don’t know, but you always want to follow.

Today’s offering is dedicated to a bright light that has unfortunately gone out. Ennio Morricone, an Italian composer who created the sound of the America western including “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” as well as hundreds of other films, died today in Rome at 91 (https://nyti.ms/3e5TmlK).

So synchronize those tail lights and enjoy some Zero G chill with Firefly.
